How to grow robust & sustainable creative businesses?

Well it’s a good question and not one that can be ironed out over a cuppa…

I understand how overwhelming it can be to look at making your business and your life more ‘green’ and/or sustainable – this has been a passion of mine ever since primary school and a workshop we took part in on packaging – see the slide with the After Eights boxes…

Open To Create… is my day to day expression in the world of being part of co-creating an inheritable world for many future generations of all species on this planet.

I trust you enjoy and find inspiration in the slides from my workshop “Giving Your Business The Green Light” run in partnership with University of East London as part of their Make It Global programme with The Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship

A lyrical and touching portrait of a community uncovering their true potential through making…

The Potential Space – Albert Potrony films Friends of Cathja

The Potential Space – a film by artist Albert Potrony.

A film developed during a period of research when Albert visited with Friends of Cathja boat in Isleworth, London between December 2013 – May 2014.

The film allows you to submerge into a hidden world of making in free and unjudged ways, most of us would be unfamiliar with. You will get the feel of the rhythms of work made by Cathja’s friends and how they learn new ways of being and connecting in this safe space.  Cathja is a Dutch barge moored in Isleworth and is a regular meeting place for adults seeking support at different times of challenge and isolation. The boat provides a place for meeting, making and moving forward very much at each individual’s pace and flow.

Commissioned by Friends of Cathja and the Mental Health Foundation for Anxiety Arts Festival London 2014.

Funded by Time To Change.

Create a business that will sustain not just yourself…

Giving centre stage to London’s less well known creative communities…

You know of amazing projects happening in your own backyard, perhaps you even run one or attend a group that inspires you to reconnect with yourself after a hard day, unwind after a long week and more importantly feel a sense of connection to where you live or work…

Seeking out such groups on some of the more well hidden nooks and crannies of London has been at the heart of co-curating Anxiety Arts Festival London 2014 – and now June is finally here do take the many opportunities we have cooked up with The Dragon Cafe, Mental Fight Club, Mind and Soul Choir, Friends of Cathja, Cooltan Arts and Lambeth Addiction recovery just to name few… blink and you will have missed so many treats!

Communities programme – Anxiety Arts Festival London 2014

When thinking about what could a Communities programme look like as part of Anxiety Arts Festival London 2014

London as a body came to mind and that each of use who live, work and visit here at any given time make up that body and the roads, buildings and green spaces form the structure, the web we all co-exist in…

And what if when you as a festival goer come to a festival event you get to really challenge yourself and what you think is ‘community’ or not…

Much is written about the ‘fractured’ self or ‘split’ self and in much of my own experience of being able to come ‘home’ to myself is just as much about how I am feeling as much about where I live and  who I live with and around. And how I choose to frame this… and that community exists even if and when I say “I don’t do community” sitting hidden away in my flat…

You are invited to go into new spaces such as The Anatomy Museum and Theatre at Kings College (a hidden gem of London’s), see  supposed ‘old’ societal anxieties in new light given that many of yester year’s problems maybe seem like they have not gone away i.e. Horace Ove’s film Pressure and to see new theatre and writing that brings those real everyday anxieties such as the decline of loved ones in later life into reality through lived experience with tenderness and humour i.e. Julie McNamara’s Let Me Stay

So I hope we’ve managed to do this in our programming not just within Communities but across the whole festival – we have each played with making new collaborations with groups not usually included in festivals such as patients in locked wards, prisoners, recovery addicts and community mental health service users…

You’ll be the judges of whether it has worked… do tell me/us… @anxiety2014 #anxiety2014

Orwellian Garden… flowers in the face of humanity – The Bloomsbury Festival 19th – 20th Oct 2013

Just for the weekend 19th-20th October 2013 @BloomsburyFest

Just for the weekend 19th-20th October 2013
@BloomsburyFest

Sometimes a collaboration comes along and you can’t help but be drawn along by both the simplicity of the concept but also the depth of the message…

Artist, producer, illustrator, designer and creative polymath – Alex Beeching’s Orwellian Garden for the 2013 Bloomsbury Festival is just one of those projects.

It’s a greening project with art at it’s heart. The aim of the project is to reclaim a greying part of Senate House car park, UCL, London.

A pop up office will appear as if by magic over night for 19th & 20th October 2013 as part of the Bloomsbury Festival 2013

Contrary to Orwell’s statement in 1984 about ‘putting the boot into the face of humanity’ Alex’s garden will encourage all those who discover it’s magic to play with the greened office space, to be enchanted by the many secret floral touches to be found on closer inspection and to participate in growing a new floral form of shoe planter…

Have we sparked of your imagination? Want to learn more? Jolly good as arts, knowledge and imagination are the festival’s themes this year.

You can join in the conversation via the project Facebook page
