Killed for your creative thinking…

Je suis Anna

Je suis Anna

Imagine the very thing you live to create being the thing that one day would lead to your death?

And a death with a violent end, via an unknown to you gunmen; aggrieved at your creative interpretation of ‘their’ religion…

Events of this week have led me to ponder more than usual what is it that drives some to create with the pen, the brush…

Some with the gun?

I’m under no illusion that the events in France are created acts… acts stemming from thinking overtime that leads to actions, and in this case more thinking, planning and putting into action. Actions that within the minds of the, now, killers were ‘justifiable’.

So what am I thinking about… where we create ‘others‘ as different than us.

Where we draw conclusions about how ‘we‘ (which is really an ‘I think’ hidden in the group think, in disguise) think/be/do better, differently opposed to what ‘they‘ think/be/do less than…(here its either a ‘you’ in disguise or the nebulous ‘they’ – a generalised and separated ‘other‘).

So how is this creative? Our creative thinking leads us to picture the world, hang a frame on what we see.

This in turn creates actions, drawing to conclusions, inventing scenarios, living out dramas where we are the author of our own plays, mini series… and eventually full blown wars.

What also comes to mind is how a piece created for a daily paper; a cartoon drawn to highlight a joke about another’s religion can seem so far away from those who believe. Especially if its not what I choose to believe…

Rowan Atkinson quote #2

“The freedom to criticize ideas…” Rowan Atkinson

It strikes me in the supposed PC world we live in, or at least we ‘think’ we do we are both striving for and missing the mark…

Yet we are free to believe, creatively think, speak and act …

Freedom of speech is a human right worth dying for… then when some of ‘us’ act in ways outside of what ‘we‘ deem appropriate  (I’m in no way condoning murder and terrorism in any form) we are up in arms.

And this is the dichotomy, the mystery, the gifts of Life I continue to ponder on, seek the truths within and to create from that space…

Lyrics to Proper Propaganda – Dilated Peoples

With press passes, we bring it to you as it happens
The streets love my crew for music and rappin’
Street commander slash beat expander
Here to fight the slander with the proper propaganda
What’s happenin’? You got a question then ask it
The news is just a TV show, get past it
And this, from a quiet wartime journalist
Headlines, wake up, refuse and resist
Like this, like this, like thi-thi-this, y’all

We kick finance, action and scores of sports
Politics, new fashion and war reports
Entertainment, when we come to perform, watch
And the illest weatherman in the biz, I’m storm watch
Triclops Media, record, tape and TV
Net radio, CD or DVD, iriscience
Write rhymes on paper time
This is why Baboo is scratching and keeping time

I make the people listen boogy down and move
I make the people listen boogy down and move, yeah
I make the people listen boogy down and move

Glory, the pen is mighter than the sword
‘Cause the pen gives the word sending swords to war
They twisted it when they quoted Mao Tse-tung
They said political power comes from the barrel of a gun
The officer meets his fate, by .44, .38
It was a dirty deed but that don’t mean a dirty case
Witnesses against the state are shushed
Facts overlooked so the judge can throw the book
Perhaps for politicians with something to prove
In the city where they blew the roof off and move

Yo, questions when answered leads to more questions
Why’d it take months to remember a confession?
The principles are the same even without the name
But I still say, “M U M I A”
I have to fight, it could easily be me
But just being the thinker than speakin’ it freely
Although I use my brain before using a fist
Don’t push it, wake up, refuse and resist

What can we learn to create from our earth?

Traditional Ute Prayer (native North American)

Cosmos daisies... the whole world in a flower

Cosmos daisies… the whole world in a flower

Earth teach me stillness as the grasses are stilled with light.

Earth teach me suffering as old stones suffer with memory.

Earth teach me humility as blossoms are humbled with beginning.

Earth teach me caring as the mother who secures her young.

Earth teach me courage as the tree which stands all alone.

Earth teach me limitations as the ant which crawls on the ground.

Earth teach me freedom as the eagle which soars in the sky.

Earth teach me resignation as the leaves which die in the fall.

Earth teach me regeneration as the seed which rises in the spring.

Earth teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life.

Earth teach me to remember kindness as dry fields weep with rain.

What inspires you to give?

With the rash of ice bucket challenge films being made across the global by the great and the good I started to think about would my response be, if I were to be nominated…

Ice_tray-challenge_Anna_B_Sexton

Creatively accepting the dare to be part of the Ice Bucket Challenge…

Giving to any cause for me comes from the heart, a want to give back to a charity I believe does good work in a sector of society that needs support i.e. homelessness, housing, overseas aid

Or to causes friends inspire me to find out more about through their personal connections i.e. Harrison’s Fund or those who I deem ‘crazy’ enough to run a marathon for

So mine time did come and I was called out to do my challenge, it even had a time limit on, which I missed by a day…

And that’s ok as the dare was more than just to fill up a bucket of water with ice and throw it over my head on film… it was an invite to be true to myself and consider one more time what and whom would I want to give my money to and how would I respond given wasting water is not a cool thing to do in my world.

My response was based on being a fundraiser for over 15 years in different guises with the belief that giving needs to be through free choice not through feeling awkward, pressured to conform or being accepted and fit in.

My hope is my version of the ice bucket, well ice tray challenge, is a truer reflection of the creative individual I am who through free choice gives creatively either because I have so much more than enough in my life to share around and/or sometimes it’s worth not having in my more than abundant life so others I may never know can benefit from clean water, a roof over their head, a friendly face and hot food…

What inspires you to give? Have you been nominated? If yes, what was your response?

Tell me what you think…

No really…

Feedback used to scare the bejesus out of me… I read it all like criticism, new ways to add to my own internal mindtalk trains of very unhelpful and self critical chatter.

Now I welcome feedback as a tool for change, growth and love to learn (on the whole) what I can use to improve myself and what I love to be and do in the world.

Big Thank Yous in advance…

Open To Create… really would be just another idea if not for so many folk buying into what I am about…

How to grow robust & sustainable creative businesses?

Well it’s a good question and not one that can be ironed out over a cuppa…

I understand how overwhelming it can be to look at making your business and your life more ‘green’ and/or sustainable – this has been a passion of mine ever since primary school and a workshop we took part in on packaging – see the slide with the After Eights boxes…

Open To Create… is my day to day expression in the world of being part of co-creating an inheritable world for many future generations of all species on this planet.

I trust you enjoy and find inspiration in the slides from my workshop “Giving Your Business The Green Light” run in partnership with University of East London as part of their Make It Global programme with The Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship

A lyrical and touching portrait of a community uncovering their true potential through making…

The Potential Space – Albert Potrony films Friends of Cathja

The Potential Space – a film by artist Albert Potrony.

A film developed during a period of research when Albert visited with Friends of Cathja boat in Isleworth, London between December 2013 – May 2014.

The film allows you to submerge into a hidden world of making in free and unjudged ways, most of us would be unfamiliar with. You will get the feel of the rhythms of work made by Cathja’s friends and how they learn new ways of being and connecting in this safe space.  Cathja is a Dutch barge moored in Isleworth and is a regular meeting place for adults seeking support at different times of challenge and isolation. The boat provides a place for meeting, making and moving forward very much at each individual’s pace and flow.

Commissioned by Friends of Cathja and the Mental Health Foundation for Anxiety Arts Festival London 2014.

Funded by Time To Change.
